What remains after the Crown City
The battle for the Crown City belongs to the past. For those who survived it, however, its consequences do not.
Chapter 5 turns toward the people left behind and what became of them after the destruction. The immediate struggle for survival gives way to something quieter: the question of what remains once the event itself is over.
The survivors must live with what happened, what was lost, and what that day may ultimately have demanded from them.
Throughout Threads of the Crown City, Cynewulf has been our way into this history. His account has carried the story away from the ship and into a city already moving toward catastrophe. Now, as his story reaches its conclusion, ANT IDOL returns with him to the present.
Five chapters, one prologue
Threads of the Crown City was deliberately given room to exist as more than a brief piece of exposition.
Before moving into the larger journey of ANT IDOL, we wanted the Crown City to feel like a place that had existed independently of the characters who will carry the story forward. Its streets, rulers, ordinary people, beliefs, fears, and destruction form part of a past whose significance will extend beyond these opening chapters.
That made for an unconventional beginning: five chapters devoted to a story within the story.
But with Chapter 5, that beginning is now complete.
Cynewulf has finished his tale. We are back aboard the ship. And for the first time since ANT IDOL began, the story can move forward from the present rather than further into the past.
The prologue ends here
Chapter 5 is both the conclusion of Threads of the Crown City and the end of the prologue of ANT IDOL.
