After the destruction seen in the first two chapters, the opening arc widens its perspective. The crisis is no longer confined to the streets and ruins of Fortuna. It has reached the empire itself.
The emperor goes to the coast
A storm moves across the realm as the emperor's council lies broken and his authority begins to fracture. Rather than retreat, he leads his army toward the shoreline.
There, beneath thunder and rain, he directs his challenge beyond the empire and toward a foreign god. He does not ask quietly. He demands an answer.
The scene marks a change in scale for Ant Idol. The consequences of Fortuna's destruction are political as well as personal, and the response of those in power begins to reveal the structures, beliefs, and desperation holding the Northern Circle Empire together.
Power confronted by something it cannot command
Ant Idol repeatedly returns to the question of control: who possesses it, who believes they possess it, and what happens when reality refuses to obey.
Part 3 places that question at the highest level of the imperial hierarchy. An emperor can command soldiers and councils. The shoreline presents him with something else entirely.
